On this day in 1913 Woolwich Arsenal played their first ever game at Highbury, beating Leicester Fosse 2-1.
In the 93 years Arsenal called this wonderful stadium home some of the most iconic moments in the clubs history took place and it didn't earn the nickname "the home of football" for nothing.
Used for many different occasions through the years such as FA Cup semi finals, Baseball the 1948 Olympics and even boxing (The Great Muhammad Ali boxed there. It was the venue for the 1966 World Heavyweight boxing title bout between Henry Cooper and Muhammad Ali, which Ali won).
During WW2 the stadium was used as an ARP Station and bombed, through WW2 Arsenal played their home games at White Hart Lane (yeah I know but true)
It was also host to the England National team on 12 occasions. These included both England's FIRST full home international against opposition outside of Great Britain and Ireland (Belgium in 1923), and the "Battle of Highbury", England's 3–2 win over World Champions Italy in 1934, where a record seven Arsenal players started the match, the most players from a single club to play in an England fixture.
In total Arsenal played 2010 games at Highbury, winning 1196 and scoring 4038 goals with an overall win rate of 60%! (We only lost 339 in 96 years!)
As I said before it didn't earn the nickname THE HOME OF FOOTBALL for nothing.
