What South Africans will benefit from Trump's call to President Zuma
A foreign editor of SABC, one of the South African media, Sophie Mukueno has highlighted the importance of US President Donald Trump's call to President Jacob Zuma.
Trump is expected to speak with President Jacob Zuma today, February 13, in a telephonic conference at 5.30 pm as part of the Africa Day celebration.
It will be the the first time the two presidents speak since Trump was inaugurated in January.
Sophie Mukueno in a live programme explained how important the call is for South Africa.
She said: "As it is for Nigeria, President Donald Trump's call to South Africa is huge and a great one.
South Africa is a gateway to Africa. South Africa participates in many multi-lateral organizations. And South Africa is one of the countries that are very influential on the continent, around the globe, particularly developing nations.
President Donald Trump is fully aware of South Africa's role and what the country has done in the past, and how serious people take South Africa.
I think it is the right thing to do if that happens around half past 5 this afternoon
For the two African states, the call could signify Trump's support for the two African large economies. It also means that America cannot be an island – it has to cooperate with members of the International community."
Geoffrey York who is the Africa correspondent for The Globe disclosed via his twitter page that Trump is going to call Zuma and his Nigerian counterpart Muhammadu Buhari
President Buhari is in London, UK where he is on extended medical leave after he postponed his return to Nigeria citing medical reasons.
According to York, Trump will call Buhari first before speaking with his South African counterpart.
