PATRICIA MAKES HISTORY!
You've learned the
truth about good leadership for women and men...
now get inspired by real
stories of guys supporting female leaders
for the good of their school and
community!
A 50/50 SUCCESS STORY
On the 2nd of
September 2015, history was made in the Federal College of Education, Eha-Amufu
in Enugu State.
Since the inception of
the institution in 1981, only male students had ever become Presidents of the
Student Union Government even though the population of the school was made up
of 80% females and 20% males.
The females in the
school, despite being the majority, were very content in serving as deputies to
their male counterparts.
GIRLS STEPPING UP TO LEAD
In 2015, everything
changed because in the SUG elections that year, 3 girls and 8 guys indicated their
interest in running for the coveted post of SUG President. Soon the race became
tough and only 3 contestants were left - 2 girls and a guy - and then the most
amazing thing happened!
POSITIVE MASCULINITY
Vincent Nwafor, the
only guy in the race, in a show of positive masculinity, stepped down and
joined forces to campaign for the ladies, after realizing
their amazing
leadership skills.
In a fierce
Presidential race, Patricia Edoga became the first democratically elected
female SUG President in the history of the Institution scoring 669
votes and
defeating her opponent who scored 329 votes.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
This is just one
example of men standing up for women and supporting
them to take up leadership
positions. There are other ways in which we can
all support women to take
up leadership positions such as:
Being more sensitive to the way gender stereotypes influence our
attitudes and actions when it comes to leadership decisions
Actively supporting and encouraging women to take up leadership
positions
Challenging those who say women can't make good leaders
Together, we can all
make the world a better place where leadership is
based on merit!
