IS NIGERIA REALLY AN ISLAMIC COUNTRY

I had the zeal and purpose to write about this based on the facts and events that has happened, and that has been happening in this country called Nigeria.

The issue of Islam and its effect on Nigeria started in the year 1804 up to 1808, when an Islamic fanatic in the name of Usman Dan Fodioinvaded the land of the Hausa’s, the people he claimed to be infidels. He killed almost every soul in the land, and installed Islam as a religion in the Northern part of Nigeria, making Sokoto headquarter of Islam, and the caliphate of Muslim. With the mindset of conquering the whole of Nigeria from there, he made an attempt and succeeded in most part of Western Nigeria, but couldn’t succeed in the Southern part of Nigeria.

The incident played a role in the establishment of Islamic fanatics in the country. The jihadist movement never stopped after the first jihad by Usman Dan Fodio, it paved the way for the movement off Islam in the country, which has really affected the development off Nigeria.

Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida registered Nigeria, a secular state; and you know what that means, as a member of Organization of Islamic Council (IOC), without due consultation with Nigerians. Based on the fact that Nigeria is a secular state, you don’t make such decisions without consulting the people. He spent billions of naira from the country’s treasury to bankroll the organization, and people see it as a normal thing, I weep for this country.

Another issue that propelled me to write about this is the issue of dual ideology, how can a country that claims to be a secular state, have Sharia in its constitution whereas the country is not an Islamic state; too bad. Is it that there were no Christians amongst the committee that drafted the constitution, or they were just there doing nothing.

The present president of Nigeria registered the country among the member state of Arab to fight Terrorism, my question now is; Is Nigeria now an Islamic state, where the president can make decision that favours the Islamic world without consulting the people he is leading. What do we call this? Is it sheer disrespect to the other tribes or he is just trying to perfect his already planned ideas. Time will tell!

Based on this premise, am not trying to sound tribalistic, or been a religious bigot, just expressing my inner thought and to put things straight. The country is going down on a daily basis, and until things are done the right way, the country will keep going down until we break away.
